Are you going to an 80s themed Halloween party or thinking of hosting one yourself? If you are, then one of the first things you need to do is to decide on your costume. One of the great things about the 80s was the disco rage, and from that alone, you have tons of costume ideas! Although the movie Saturday Night Fever came out in 1977, the disco fever that it stirred up continued well into the 80s and beyond. Even today, how many times will you see a John Travolta lookalike wearing a white polyester leisure suit at a Halloween party? That movie alone most likely produced many of the outrageous styles of outfits that carried on throughout the disco craze for years to come.
When you think of 80s disco costumes, you can’t help but have visions of men wearing shiny nylon shirts unbuttoned to the navel, with tight polyester bell bottom pants. And let’s not forget the jewelry they wear, from the flashy rings to the over abundance of heavy gold chains around their necks. A short man can wear a pair of platform shoes will would add 4 to 5 inches of height, which was very popular then.
And when it comes to women, the styles are even more lavish and eye catching. A woman can wear a tight bodysuit made of gold lamè fabric with bell bottoms flaring around her ankles, and heels so high that you wonder how she can even walk (let alone dance) in them. Or she can choose a slinky skintight dress to really call attention to herself. Also, she should wear lots of shiny accessories such as belts, rings, earrings, and necklaces.
Another mainstay in the costumes of the 80s disco would be the Madonna lookalikes. With the different stages of dress that she went through, there are many choices to pick from. One idea would be to wear a corset top with a frilly short layered skirt, accompanied by tight nylons that covered to just below the knees–and lace up boots. Another would be the one piece “bullet bra” outfit worn with fishnet stockings. But no matter which you choose, the big hair tied up with a scarf and outrageous makeup is a must.
It is really hard to get the 80s disco look wrong. The main idea is to express yourself in a non-conventional way and have fun doing it!
