Halloween is just around the corner, and with it comes the time of year to let loose and express your wild side! In addition to candy, decorations and party planning, there’s also the deliberation of choosing the perfect costume. You don’t want to be dressed like everyone else, but you also don’t want to be the drably dressed wallflower in the corner. After careful consideration, why not capitalize on the wildly successful movie adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s literary masterpiece and go dressed as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland!
This is a great costume choice, because it’s very versatile, with versions for both men and women! In the tale, the Mad Hatter wore a suit and top hat, but there’s no reason you can’t take that combination and make it your own – in fact, it’s encouraged! No matter your age, there’s a Mad Hatter costume out there that will really make your Halloween a bright night.
Depending on the adaptation of the story, the Mad Hatter is either dressed in bright colors, or a black suit. You can also use any combination that you’d like, and make it a black suit with bright color additions. Costume shops also sell ready-made costume kits, if you’d like to buy one pre-made. For Mad Hatter Halloween costume accessories, a top hat is essential, but it doesn’t have to be just black – make it any color you’d like! Try mixing the black suit with a gold vest and checkerboard pants, or green pants with a yellow jacket; as long as it resembles an old-fashioned three-piece suit, you’re keeping in tradition.
For women, there are less options than men but that doesn’t mean the costume has to be boring! White thigh-high tights, or striped tights of any color, are a must-have accessory; you can add black heels or small boots to the outfit, as well. A top hat is still a must, but it can coordinate with your dress, which is usually a corset with a short, bouncy skirt. If you’d prefer to not bare all for a costume, you can try a suit on for size, as well! If you can find a suit that is tailored to your size, you can customize it with a bustier or corset underneath for a different approach.
And as always, accessories make the costume complete. In addition to the top hat, a pocket watch would be a good investment, as well as an orange costume wig. In some instances, the Mad Hatter is shown to have wild, orange hair underneath his hat. Makeup is an option, but is not necessary; in the latest adaptation, the character is depicted as wearing garish, brightly-colored full-face makeup. Some even go as far as to order Mad Hatter contacts so that their eyes are that perfect neon-greenish, yellowish color that really makes the whole costume more real.
